Estimate crochet blanket yarn from your own project data

Scale yarn from a measured crochet swatch or from a blanket you already know. The calculator keeps the base estimate, your planning buffer, whole-skein rounding and yarn already on hand separate.

Target blanket

Enter the finished width and length you actually plan to crochet. Include any size you want the main blanket body to reach before separately constructed borders.

Target size 50 × 60 in 3,000 sq in

Yarn package

Use the length and weight printed for one skein or ball. Skein weight is required only when the selected estimate method starts from yarn weight.

Measured crochet swatch

Use a swatch made with the same yarn, hook, stitch pattern and tension planned for the blanket. The calculator scales measured yarn use by area.

Weighing is often convenient because yarn length can be derived from the label length-to-weight ratio.

Plan Repeat-Compatible Stitches and Rows

For a rectangular blanket worked in rows, use the target body size above and gauge measured in your actual pattern stitch. Measure an interior gauge span; it need not be the whole yarn-weighing swatch. Width and height use the blanket unit shown above.

Use a multiple of 1 plus 0 for plain rows. Enter the repeat rule for completed row stitches, not the foundation-chain instruction. Turning chains and edge stitches depend on the pattern; they are not automatically added.

Counts round upward to the first valid repeat that reaches the target, so the planned body may be larger. After applying it, press Estimate blanket yarn above. Borders, motif assembly, corner-to-corner construction and changes in gauge are excluded. Make your swatch with the same yarn, hook and stitch pattern, as explained in the Craft Yarn Council gauge guidance.

How to use the Crochet Blanket Yarn Calculator

How to use the Crochet Blanket Yarn Calculator

  1. Enter the target blanket body’s width and length. Choose inches or centimeters and check the unit beside each field. Size presets are starting measurements, not universal blanket standards.
  2. Select a measured swatch or a comparable finished blanket. Use the same yarn, hook size, stitch pattern and representative tension as your planned project.
  3. Choose how you measured the yarn: weight or length for a swatch; length, weight or skein-equivalents for a reference blanket. Enter matching label information where the chosen method requires it.
  4. Enter your planning buffer and full matching skeins already owned. Select Estimate blanket yarn, then review the base requirement, buffered amount, whole skeins and additional skeins to buy.

The Crochet Blanket Yarn Calculator scales observed yarn consumption. It does not assign an exact yardage from a yarn-weight category alone. Worsted, DK and bulky describe different yarn thicknesses; they do not establish how much your particular stitch pattern consumes.

Follow one estimate from swatch to shopping quantity

For this example, enter a 50 × 60-inch body, a 5 × 5-inch swatch using 8 grams, and yarn labeled 440 yards per 200 grams. Choose a 10% buffer and two full skeins on hand. The Crochet Blanket Yarn Calculator separates these stages:

Worked swatch estimate with a separately stated buffer
StageCalculationResult
Area multiplier(50 × 60) ÷ (5 × 5)120
Base yarn8 g × 120 × (440 yd ÷ 200 g)2,112 yd
Planning buffer2,112 × 10%211.2 yd
Buffered requirement2,112 + 211.22,323.2 yd
Whole skeins requiredRound 2,323.2 ÷ 440 upward6
Additional skeins to buy6 required − 2 owned4

Six full skeins supply 2,640 yards, leaving 316.8 yards above the buffered requirement. That whole-skein surplus differs from the deliberate 211.2-yard buffer. Do not add the same buffer again unless you intend a second allowance.

Use the measurement method you actually have

With direct-length measurement, a 5 × 5-inch swatch using 17.6 yards gives the same 2,112-yard base: 17.6 × 120. With weight measurement, the Crochet Blanket Yarn Calculator converts the scaled weight using the length-to-weight ratio printed for the same yarn. Do not pair one yarn’s swatch with another yarn’s label.

The shared relationship is base yarn = measured yarn × target area ÷ measured area. Apply your buffer once, divide by yarn per skein, round upward and subtract full matching skeins owned, stopping the shopping quantity at zero.

Plan a body that respects your stitch repeats

The Crochet Blanket Yarn Calculator includes a separate stitch-and-row planner above. Enter an interior gauge span and its counted stitches and rows. This measurement serves a different purpose from the whole swatch used to measure yarn consumption.

For 23 stitches across 4.6 inches, a 20-inch target needs exactly 100 completed-row stitches. With a multiple of one plus zero, the planner keeps 100. If your pattern requires a multiple of six plus two, it selects 104: six × seventeen plus two. Rows follow the same upward-to-valid-repeat rule.

Plan a body that respects your stitch repeats

Enter the rule for completed stitches, not a foundation-chain instruction. Turning chains, edge stitches and whether a repeat may be omitted depend on the pattern. The Crochet Blanket Yarn Calculator does not infer those instructions from a stitch name.

Review the planned dimensions, then choose Use planned body size for yarn estimate and calculate yarn again. Repeat decisions use exact entered numbers. Display uses twelve significant digits; applying a repeating dimension rounds it upward at that precision. Editing measurements invalidates the old plan.

Scale a comparable finished blanket

In reference mode, the Crochet Blanket Yarn Calculator uses yarn actually consumed. A 40 × 50-inch blanket containing 1,600 yards scales to a 50 × 60-inch body by 3,000 ÷ 2,000 = 1.5, giving 2,400 yards before buffer and skein rounding.

Purchased skeins are not necessarily consumed skeins. If six were bought but only 5.3 skein-equivalents went into the reference, enter the consumed quantity. Changing yarn, hook, stitch texture or tension weakens the comparison; use a new swatch when the construction changes substantially.

Keep the sample and finishing assumptions consistent

For yarn scaling, measure the area represented by the yarn you weighed or measured. Do not combine an interior 4-inch gauge area with the yarn weight of an entire 6-inch swatch. Yarnspirations’ crochet gauge guidance explains the role of a sample before beginning the project. Measure consistently after any intended washing or blocking.

The Crochet Blanket Yarn Calculator estimates the represented fabric, not every finishing detail. Borders follow edge geometry and their own stitch construction; fringe, tassels, motif joins and different stitch sections need separate allowances. A percentage buffer cannot precisely calculate a large decorative border.

Total yardage also does not allocate colors. Check stripe proportions, motif counts and border colors separately, and round purchases for each color independently. Enough combined yarn can still leave one color short. Measurement error remains important: a 0.5-gram swatch difference multiplied by 120 changes the scaled weight by 60 grams.

Crochet Blanket Yarn Calculator questions

Can a partial skein count as one owned skein?

No. The on-hand field counts full skeins. Measure a partial skein separately and keep it in your own inventory calculation; counting it as full can understate what you still need to buy.

Does changing units change the project?

Unit controls convert the entered measurements. Check the displayed labels after switching, especially the blanket, swatch and yarn-label units. One inch equals 2.54 centimeters and one yard equals 0.9144 meters. Use matching units when comparing a manual calculation.

Is this a guarantee that the yarn will be enough?

No. A representative sample and explicit buffer support planning, but cannot predict changed tension, reworking or different construction. See our calculation standards for how assumptions and verification limits are documented.
