Use your current coursework grade, the final exam weight and a target course grade to calculate the minimum final exam result needed.

This tool assumes the current grade represents completed coursework before the final and that the final exam is the only remaining weighted component.
Start With the Correct Current Grade for the Grade Needed on Final Calculator
The Grade Needed on Final Calculator requires a current coursework grade that excludes the final exam.
This value should represent performance across the completed portion of the course, normalized to a percentage before the final exam is included.
Do not enter a temporary portal grade that treats the ungraded final as zero.
Suppose a course consists of:
- assignments worth 30%;
- quizzes worth 20%;
- a midterm worth 20%;
- a final exam worth 30%.
The completed coursework represents:
30% + 20% + 20% = 70% of the course
If the student has already secured 57.4 weighted percentage points from that completed coursework, normalize the grade against the completed 70%:
57.4 ÷ 70 × 100 = 82%
The correct current coursework grade for the calculator is therefore:
82%
A portal might temporarily display 57.4% if the ungraded 30% final is being counted as zero. Entering that number as the current coursework grade would understate the student’s completed-work performance and produce the wrong final-exam requirement.

How the Required Final Grade Is Calculated
Let:
- C = current coursework grade;
- W = final-exam weight as a decimal;
- T = target overall course grade;
- F = required final-exam percentage.
The completed coursework carries the portion of the course not assigned to the final:
Coursework weight = 1 − W
The weighted contribution already secured is:
Coursework contribution = C × (1 − W)
Next, find the gap between that contribution and the target:
Contribution gap = T − Coursework contribution
When the gap is zero or negative, the selected target is already mathematically secured.
Otherwise:
Required final percentage = Contribution gap ÷ W
Written as one formula:
Required final percentage = (Target grade − Current grade × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight
The final weight must be converted to decimal form.
For example:
30% = 0.30
If the result is:
- 0% or below: the target is already secured mathematically;
- between 0% and 100%: the target can be reached through the final;
- exactly 100%: a perfect final is required;
- above 100%: the target cannot be reached through the final alone.
Worked Example: What Final Grade Is Needed for an 80% Course Grade?
Suppose:

5. Convert the Percentage Into Exam Marks
For a final worth 120 marks:
75.3333… ÷ 100 × 120 = 90.4 marks
In decimal-mark mode:
90.4 out of 120
In whole-mark mode:
ceiling(90.4) = 91 marks
The result is:

Verify the Minimum Whole-Mark Score
When whole marks are required, the reported answer should be checked against one mark less.
At 90 out of 120:
90 ÷ 120 × 100 = 75%
Projected course grade:
82 × 0.70 + 75 × 0.30 = 79.9%
That remains below the 80% target.
At 91 out of 120:
91 ÷ 120 × 100 = 75.8333…%
Projected course grade:
82 × 0.70 + 75.8333… × 0.30 = 80.15%
Therefore:
90 marks = insufficient
91 marks = sufficient
This confirms that 91 marks is the minimum whole-mark score.
The 0.15-percentage-point margin above the target is caused by rounding upward to an attainable whole mark. It is not bonus credit.
Check the Lowest and Highest Course Grade Still Possible
Before the final is taken, its weight determines the range of overall grades still possible.
Lowest Possible Grade
Assume a 0% score on the final:
Lowest possible course grade = Coursework contribution
Maximum Possible Grade
Assume a 100% score on the final:
Maximum possible course grade = Coursework contribution + Final-exam weight in percentage points
For an 82% coursework grade with a 30% final:

Impossible Target Example
Suppose:
- current coursework grade: 60%;
- final weight: 20%;
- target course grade: 75%.
The completed coursework carries 80% of the course:
60 × 0.80 = 48 percentage points
Even a perfect final contributes only another:
100 × 0.20 = 20 percentage points
Maximum possible course grade:
48 + 20 = 68%
The selected target is:
75%
Because:
75% > 68%
the target cannot be reached through the final exam alone.
Perfect-Final Boundary
Suppose:
- current coursework grade: 75%;
- final weight: 20%;
- target course grade: 80%.
Secured contribution:
75 × 0.80 = 60 points
The final must supply:
80 − 60 = 20 points
Required final percentage:
20 ÷ 0.20 = 100%
The target is mathematically achievable, but only with a perfect final score.
When the Final Is Worth 100% of the Course
If the final carries the entire course weight:
Final weight = 100% = 1.00
Then:
Coursework weight = 1 − 1 = 0
The current coursework contribution becomes:
C × 0 = 0
The required final percentage is therefore simply the target grade.
For example, a target course grade of:
75%
requires:
75% on a final worth 100% of the course
Any current coursework-grade input has no mathematical effect in this special case.
Why Final-Exam Weight Changes the Required Score
The same current grade and target can produce different final-exam requirements depending on how heavily the exam is weighted.
Suppose:
- Current coursework grade: 80%
- Target course grade: 82%

A final worth only 10% has limited ability to move the overall grade, so a perfect score is required in this example.
As the final weight increases, more of the course remains undecided and the exam has greater influence on the final result.
This is why simply calculating:
Target grade − Current grade
does not give the required final score.
The grades must be combined according to their course weights.
Convert the Required Percentage Into Marks
The calculator can determine a marks requirement only when the final-exam maximum is known.
No Exam Maximum Entered
If no maximum is provided, the result can still show:
Required final percentage
but cannot convert that percentage into a raw exam score.
Decimal-Mark Scoring
If fractional marks can genuinely be awarded, decimal mode keeps the mathematical marks threshold.
For example:
42.5 marks required
remains:
42.5 marks
Whole-Mark Scoring
If only complete marks can be awarded, a decimal requirement must be rounded upward.
For example:
42.1 marks
becomes:
43 marks
Rounding down to 42 could leave the projected course grade below the selected target.

Account for Fixed Scoring Increments
Some finals do not allow every decimal or whole-number score.
Possible scoring steps include:
- 0.25 marks;
- 0.5 marks;
- 2 marks per question;
- 5 marks per task.
Suppose the exact threshold is:
42.3 marks
If half marks are possible, the next attainable score is:
42.5 marks
If only two-mark increments can be earned, the next attainable score may be:
44 marks
The calculator provides the mathematical threshold. When the exam uses fixed increments, round upward to the next score that can actually be earned.
When the Target Is Already Secured
A target can sometimes be mathematically secured before the final.
Suppose the completed coursework contribution already equals or exceeds the target.
Then:
Contribution gap ≤ 0
and:
Required final percentage = 0%
This means no additional weighted contribution is mathematically needed to reach that particular overall target.
It does not mean a student can automatically skip the final.
A course may separately require:
- sitting the final exam;
- earning a minimum score on the final;
- completing every assessment;
- satisfying attendance requirements;
- meeting another compulsory condition.
A Separate Final-Exam Minimum Can Override the Target Calculation
Sometimes the score needed for the overall weighted target is lower than a compulsory minimum on the final itself.
For example:
- calculated final score needed for target: 42%;
- compulsory final-exam minimum: 50%.
The relevant score becomes:
50%
because both conditions must be satisfied.
The calculator determines the weighted score required to reach the selected course target. It cannot automatically know separate examination-pass rules unless those rules are entered or checked independently.
When to Use a Different Grade Calculator
The Grade Needed on Final Calculator works best when:
- the current grade represents completed coursework only;
- the final is the only unfinished weighted component;
- completed coursework fills the complete non-final portion of the course;
- the final weight is known;
- the standard weighted-average method applies.
Several Weighted Components Are Still Unfinished
If assignments, projects, quizzes, exams, or other weighted categories still require scores, use the Weighted Grade Calculator.
A single final-exam formula cannot correctly solve several independent unfinished weighted components.
Remaining Work Is Based on Raw Marks, Not a Weighted Final
If the course simply adds raw marks and you need to know how many marks are still required from unfinished work, use the Required Marks Calculator.

existing raw marks + remaining raw marks → target score
whereas this calculator solves:
normalized coursework grade + weighted final exam → target overall grade
Keeping these methods separate prevents a raw-marks problem from being treated as a weighted-grade problem.
Use the Course’s Actual Weighting Rules
Course grading structures are not universal.
A final may be worth 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, or another share depending on the course, and some courses use additional grading rules.
For example, Princeton University’s COS 240 grading policy publishes explicit percentage weights for assignments, quizzes, participation, and the final examination.
Use the final-exam weight and grading method stated for your own course rather than assuming a generic weighting structure.
The calculation may also require adjustment when:
- an earlier grade will be dropped or replaced;
- extra credit sits outside the normal weighted total;
- results are curved or normalized;
- the portal calculates current grades differently;
- category weights change under special conditions.
Calculation Method
The Grade Needed on Final Calculator:
- determines the weighted coursework contribution already secured;
- calculates the remaining contribution needed to reach the target;
- divides that gap by the final-exam weight;
- converts the required percentage into marks when an exam maximum is supplied;
- applies whole-mark or decimal scoring;
- checks the projected overall grade at the reported score.

- ordinary achievable targets;
- perfect-final requirements;
- impossible targets;
- 100%-final-weight cases;
- decimal-mark thresholds;
