How the overall figures differ
Attendance policies may count lectures, labs, tutorials, canceled classes or approved absences differently. Compare the result with the official record used by your institution.
How the Subject Wise Attendance Calculator Calculates Each Subject
The calculator evaluates each subject from the number of classes recorded as held and attended.
Attendance percentage = Attended classes ÷ Classes held × 100
Missed classes are:
Missed classes = Classes held − Attended classes
For example, if 32 of 40 Mathematics classes have been attended:
32 ÷ 40 × 100 = 80% attendance
and:
40 − 32 = 8 missed classes
A subject with no classes held does not yet have a meaningful attendance percentage. It is shown as unavailable and excluded from the summary averages until at least one class has been recorded.
Weighted Overall Attendance vs Unweighted Subject Average
The calculator provides two summary figures because they answer different questions.
Weighted Overall Attendance
Weighted overall attendance combines the actual class totals from every active subject:
Weighted overall attendance = Total attended classes ÷ Total classes held × 100
Subjects with more recorded sessions therefore have more influence on this result.
Consider:

Combined totals are:
Total classes held = 40 + 20 + 10 = 70
Total classes attended = 32 + 15 + 6 = 53
Weighted overall attendance:
53 ÷ 70 × 100 = 75.71%
Mathematics has a greater effect on the combined result than Chemistry because more Mathematics classes have been held.
Unweighted Subject Average
The unweighted subject average gives every active subject equal influence regardless of how many classes have been recorded.
Unweighted subject average = Sum of subject percentages ÷ Number of active subjects
Using the same record:
(80% + 75% + 60%) ÷ 3 = 71.67%
Chemistry has the same influence as Mathematics in this calculation even though fewer Chemistry classes were held.

The two averages will match when every active subject has the same number of held classes or when every subject has the same attendance percentage. They can also occasionally match when differences offset one another.
An institution may use individual subject percentages, a combined attendance figure, or another method. Treat the unweighted average as a comparison measure unless the applicable attendance policy specifically uses it.
Worked Multi-Subject Attendance Record
Suppose a student selects a minimum attendance requirement of 75%.

The Laboratory row is excluded from the averages because no classes have been held.
For the three active subjects:
Total classes held = 24 + 36 + 20 = 80
Total classes attended = 21 + 27 + 13 = 61
Total missed classes = 80 − 61 = 19
Weighted overall attendance:
61 ÷ 80 × 100 = 76.25%
Unweighted subject average:
(87.50% + 75% + 65%) ÷ 3 = 75.83%
Both summary figures are above 75%, but Computer Science remains below the selected target.
A satisfactory overall percentage therefore does not necessarily mean that every individual subject meets its attendance requirement.
Reading Target Gaps and Subject Rankings
For each active subject, the calculator compares the current percentage with the selected target.
Target difference = Subject attendance − Required attendance
With a 75% target:

The difference is measured in percentage points, not percentage change.
For example, moving from 60% attendance to a 75% target represents:
75% − 60% = 15 percentage points
The calculator also identifies the highest and lowest attendance percentages among active subjects.
A subject with zero held classes is not treated as having 0% attendance and is excluded from this comparison.
If two or more subjects have the same percentage, they are mathematically tied even if the interface displays one first.
An unexpectedly high or low percentage can also be a useful reason to recheck that subject’s held and attended counts.
Use Consistent Attendance Records
Use cumulative figures from the same cut-off date or reporting period.
For example, a summary becomes misleading if it combines:
- Mathematics updated today;
- Physics updated last week;
- Chemistry updated at the beginning of the month.
Each individual percentage might be correct for its own date, but the combined figures would not describe one consistent attendance position.
For each subject:
- enter the number of sessions counted as held in the official record;
- enter only the sessions recorded as attended;
- use the same reporting date across subjects;
- include approved adjustments only after they appear in the record;
- keep lectures, laboratories, tutorials, or other components separate when they are assessed independently.
Do not substitute the original timetable total for the official held-class count unless that is the denominator actually used by the institution.
A cancelled session should not normally be entered as a missed class if it was never recorded as held.
Valid Input Requirements
The calculator accepts up to 30 subject rows.
For a valid calculation:
- at least one subject must have one or more held classes;
- held and attended values must be zero or positive whole numbers;
- attended classes cannot exceed held classes;
- a subject with zero held classes cannot contain attended classes;
- the selected target must be between 0% and 100%.
For example:
18 attended out of 15 held
is invalid because attendance cannot exceed the number of recorded classes.
Subject names are optional, but clear labels make the result and copied summary easier to interpret.
Names such as Calculus, Physics Lab, or English Composition are more useful than blank or ambiguous labels.
Common Attendance Record Mismatches
Using Scheduled Classes Instead of Classes Actually Held
Use the denominator shown in the relevant attendance record.
The original timetable may include sessions that were cancelled, postponed, rescheduled, or otherwise excluded from the attendance count.
Counting a Cancelled Session as an Absence
Do not enter a cancelled class as missed unless it remains recorded as a held session under the applicable attendance system.
Combining Lectures and Practical Sessions
Combining different course components can hide a shortage if lectures and laboratories are assessed separately.
Enter them as separate subject rows when separate attendance requirements apply.
Assuming Approved Leave Automatically Changes the Percentage
Medical leave, official duty, authorized absence, and similar adjustments depend on the applicable policy.
Use adjusted held or attended totals only when the official record reflects the adjustment.
Averaging Displayed Percentages Manually
Adding subject percentages and dividing by the number of subjects produces an unweighted subject average.
It does not reproduce weighted overall attendance unless the underlying class totals give equal weighting.
Rounding Too Early
Calculate attendance from the underlying held and attended counts and retain full precision until display.
Manually averaging percentages that have already been rounded can produce a small difference from the calculator result.
Current Attendance vs Future Attendance Planning
This calculator describes the attendance position represented by the classes already recorded.
It does not calculate how many future classes are required to recover from a shortage.
If a subject is below its target and you want to determine how many consecutive future classes must be attended to reach that percentage, use the Attendance Shortage Calculator.

These calculations use future classes and therefore answer different questions from the current subject-wise attendance summary.
What the Current Result Does Not Determine
The calculator does not determine:
- future attendance after additional classes;
- timetable changes that have not yet occurred;
- adjustments not reflected in the entered record;
- examination eligibility;
- shortage penalties;
- condonation or exemptions;
- approved-leave decisions;
- separate requirements that were combined into one row;
- an institution’s internal rounding or truncation method.
Meeting the selected target does not automatically prove academic or examination eligibility.
An institution, program, department, course, or instructor may apply additional attendance requirements.
Verify the Applicable Attendance Policy
Before relying on a target comparison, confirm:
- whether attendance is assessed separately for each subject;
- whether an overall attendance requirement also applies;
- whether lectures, labs, tutorials, or other components are assessed independently;
- how cancelled and rescheduled sessions are recorded;
- how approved absences are treated;
- whether percentages are rounded or truncated;
- the date through which the attendance record is current.
Attendance rules are not identical across institutions or courses. For example, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s official course policy guidance directs students to follow a class-specific attendance policy when one is stated in the syllabus.
Use the policy that applies to your own institution and course rather than assuming the selected calculator target is an official requirement.
A student portal may also display a rounded attendance percentage while storing the underlying held and attended counts at greater precision.
If its displayed percentage differs slightly from this calculation, compare the underlying class counts and rounding method before assuming either figure is incorrect.
Calculation Method
The calculator uses only the subject names, classes held, classes attended, and attendance target entered in the form.
It does not retrieve attendance records from a student portal, learning-management system, or institutional database.
Percentages are calculated from the entered class counts and rounded for display.
Use the result to review a current attendance record, compare subjects, and check manual percentage calculations. The institution’s official attendance record and applicable course policy remain authoritative for formal attendance status and eligibility.
