Component contribution breakdown
Each contribution equals grade × weight ÷ 100. Component rows may show extra decimal places when needed; totals and status use the underlying entered values.

Use the official grade percentages and course weights. When less than 100% of the course is entered, the normalized grade describes only the included components.
How the Weighted Grade Calculator Works
A weighted course grade depends on two values for every component:
- the percentage grade earned;
- the official percentage of the course assigned to that component.
A component’s effect on the overall course grade depends on both.
Use the weights published in the syllabus, gradebook, or official course outline. Components may include:
- assignments;
- quizzes;
- projects;
- practical work;
- midterms;
- final examinations;
- participation.
Each entered grade must belong to the same component as its entered course weight.
For every component:
Weighted contribution = Component grade × Course weight ÷ 100
If assignments have a grade of 88% and carry 20% of the course:
88 × 20 ÷ 100 = 17.6 percentage points
These values represent different things:

The calculator combines component grades that are already known. It does not solve for an unknown future assessment score.
Example: Follow a Weighted Grade From 60% to 100%
Consider this partially entered course:

Total entered weight:
20 + 15 + 25 = 60%
Weighted contribution from those components:
17.6 + 11.4 + 21 = 50 percentage points
Because only 60% of the course has been entered, 50% is not a complete final course grade. It is the contribution already represented by the entered components.
To express performance within the entered portion:
Normalized grade = Entered contribution ÷ Entered weight × 100
So:
50 ÷ 60 × 100 = 83.3333…%
Normalized grade:
≈ 83.33%
This means 83.33% of the weighted points available within the entered 60% have been earned.
Northern Arizona University’s weighted-grade calculation guidance demonstrates the same normalization approach for a partially graded course.
Now suppose a known final-examination grade is added:

Final-exam contribution:
75 × 40 ÷ 100 = 30 points
The course weights now total:
100%
Therefore:
17.6 + 11.4 + 21 + 30 = 80%
Complete weighted course grade:
80%
The three key results are:

These results should not be used interchangeably.
Read a Partial Weighted Grade Correctly
When entered weights total less than 100%, the calculator can also show the remaining course weight and a mathematical outcome range.
Let:
- C = weighted contribution already entered;
- R = unentered course weight.
Assuming grades in the unentered portion can range from 0% to 100%:
Lowest possible course grade = C
Maximum possible course grade = C + R
Using the previous example:
- entered contribution: 50 points;
- entered weight: 60%;
- unentered weight: 40%.

Under those assumptions, the eventual complete grade falls mathematically between:
50% and 90%
This range does not tell the calculator what the remaining 40% represents. It could be:
- unfinished assessments;
- an ungraded future examination;
- an omitted component;
- a result already known but not yet entered.
Enter known results before interpreting the range as a future-outcome range.
Actual attainable outcomes may also be narrower when a course uses fixed score increments, caps, or other grading restrictions.
How Course Weight Changes a Component’s Contribution
A higher component percentage does not necessarily create the larger contribution to the course.
Consider:

The quiz has the higher grade, but the project contributes more because its course weight is much larger.
The same 90% grade also contributes differently as its weight changes:

This is why comparing component percentages alone does not show their effect on the final course result.
Current Contribution and Potential Influence Are Different
The component with the largest current contribution does not necessarily have the greatest possible influence on the complete grade.
For example:
- 100% at 20% weight contributes 20 points;
- 40% at 40% weight contributes 16 points.
The first component currently contributes more.
The second controls:
40% of the complete course
and therefore has greater potential influence.
Potential influence is primarily determined by the official course weight.
If multiple components tie for the largest current contribution, the calculator can report all tied components rather than selecting one arbitrarily.
Use Official Course Weights, Not Raw Maximum Marks
Maximum marks and course weights are not automatically equivalent.
Suppose:
- Assignment: marked out of 50
- Final examination: marked out of 100
but the syllabus assigns:
- Assignments: 30%
- Final examination: 70%
The raw maximums create the ratio:
50 : 100
which corresponds to:
33.33% : 66.67%
That is not the official:
30% : 70%
course weighting.
The correct calculator inputs are:

Raw marks should be combined proportionally only when the grading system actually treats every raw point as equally valuable.
Calculate a Weighted Category Before Entering It
A course may assign one overall weight to a category containing several assessments.
Suppose quizzes carry:
20% of the course
and the individual results are:
- Quiz 1: 18/20
- Quiz 2: 14/20
- Quiz 3: 32/40
If every quiz point is equally valuable within the category:
Combined marks = 18 + 14 + 32 = 64
Combined maximum = 20 + 20 + 40 = 80
Therefore:
Quiz category grade = 64 ÷ 80 × 100
= 80%
Enter:
- Quiz category grade: 80%
- Quiz category course weight: 20%
Weighted contribution:
80 × 20 ÷ 100 = 16 points
Do not enter each quiz with the full 20% course weight. That would count the same category weight several times.
The raw-points method is appropriate only when points inside the category are intended to have equal value.
If the course instead:
- averages assessment percentages equally;
- applies internal weights;
- drops the lowest result;
- replaces a score;
- applies penalties;
- caps the category;
calculate the official category percentage first, then enter that percentage with the category’s official course weight.
Understand Weight-Total Validation
The sum of entered course weights determines how the result is interpreted.

A total above 100% can occur when:
- a category is entered twice;
- both a category and its subcomponents are entered;
- raw maximum marks are mistaken for course weights;
- components from different grading plans are mixed;
- results from different courses or semesters are combined.
Individual rows may look valid by themselves while the combined weighted setup is still invalid.
Zero Grades and Blank Rows
A grade of:
0%
is a valid component grade when that component has a positive course weight.
For example:

Contribution:
0 × 25 ÷ 100 = 0 points
The component still represents:
25% of the course
A completely unused row can be ignored.
A row containing only a grade or only a weight should be completed or removed because its component relationship is incomplete.
How Display Precision and Rounding Work
The calculator should perform grade calculations from the underlying values and use display precision only for presentation.
Suppose:
50 ÷ 60 × 100 = 83.333333…%
Depending on the selected display precision, this might appear as:
- 83%
- 83.3%
- 83.33%
- 83.333%
- 83.3333%
Changing display precision does not alter the stored grades, weights, contributions, or status.
Rounding Must Not Change Weight Status
Suppose entered weight is:
99.6%
With zero-decimal display rounding, it may visually appear as:
100%
but mathematically the setup remains:
0.4 percentage points short of complete
Partial, complete, and invalid status should therefore be based on the underlying weight total, not independently rounded display values.
Displayed Rows May Not Add Perfectly
Individual contributions may also be rounded for display.
Several displayed rows can therefore sum to a number that differs slightly from the separately displayed final result.
That does not necessarily indicate a calculation error when the final result is based on the underlying unrounded contributions.
Apply Course Rules Before Entry
The calculator assumes each entered component percentage is already the percentage that should count under the course’s official grading rules.
Apply relevant adjustments first, including:
- dropped assignments;
- late penalties;
- replacement exams;
- corrected marks;
- category caps;
- special adjustments;
- extra-credit treatment.
For extra credit, standard component-grade fields accept:
0% to 100%
If a course produces a category result above 100%, follow the institution’s official method before entering it. Depending on the grading system, that may involve capping the category, adding bonus points separately, or applying another defined adjustment.
The standard weighted-average model may also not reproduce every system involving:
- grading curves;
- institutional scaling;
- score replacement;
- nonstandard extra credit;
- discretionary adjustments;
- special rounding or truncation policies.
The calculator combines the adjusted grades and weights supplied to it; it does not independently reproduce every institutional grading policy.

Different grade questions require different calculations.
Unknown Weighted Final Exam

Remaining Raw Marks

Raw Marks That Need Converting to a Percentage
If a component score is:
42 out of 60
convert it before entering the weighted grade:
42 ÷ 60 × 100 = 70%
For direct conversion, use the Marks Percentage Calculator.
Then enter:
- component grade: 70%;
- official course weight: the weight assigned to that component.
Do not treat the raw maximum of 60 as the course weight unless the grading system explicitly does so.
When Future Components Are Still Unknown
If several future assessments remain unknown, there is no single complete weighted grade until actual or assumed grades are supplied.
For example, a course may still contain:
- an unknown project;
- an unknown final examination;
- an unknown participation result.
The calculator can show the contribution already earned and the mathematical range allowed by the remaining weight.
You can also enter assumed future grades to model a scenario, but those results represent assumptions rather than known outcomes.
Calculation Method
For each entered component:
Weighted contribution = Component grade × Course weight ÷ 100
For all entered components:
Entered contribution = Sum of weighted contributions
Entered weight = Sum of course weights
When entered weight is below 100%:
Normalized grade = Entered contribution ÷ Entered weight × 100
Unentered weight = 100% − Entered weight
Under the standard 0–100% assumption for unentered grades:
Lowest mathematical course grade = Entered contribution
Maximum mathematical course grade = Entered contribution + Unentered weight
When entered weight equals 100%:
Complete weighted grade = Sum of weighted contributions
When entered weight exceeds 100%:
Calculation status = Invalid
The calculator uses underlying entered values rather than independently rounded display values when determining contributions, totals, normalization, boundaries, and weight status.
Official course weights, category calculations, score adjustments, extra-credit treatment, and recorded final grades remain governed by the relevant instructor or institution.
